Demolition Derby

On Saturday, our new friends asked us to go to a demolition derby. We've never been to one, so we jumped at the chance. I have to say, it was totally awesome. It was also one of the stupidest things I've ever seen. There is really no point to it, well, besides destruction.

The cars line up facing the wall, and at the end of a count down, they all go in reverse and smash into each other. Stupid, but cool. We saw all sorts of crashes: cars on top of each other, broken spraying coolant lines, shredded tires, and smashed rear ends.

There was also a mini-eight race, where the cars go in a figure 8 and smash into each other. The cars where all jap 4-cylinder cars, barely working. Again, totally stupid but really cool to watch.

I had so much fun watching all the destruction. It was really cool when a car would go to one end of the arena, and then barrel down to the other side to smash into a car that was stuck, or wasn't out of the race. The crowd would erupt with clapping and cheering. Awesome! To get a better picture of it all, check out our pictures of the event. I hope to go to another one, I think they have them alot around here. In fact, if I had the money, I would love to acquire a car, fix it to be destroyed, and enter a derby. That would be so sweet. Nothing like some good hick entertainment!

I like those derbys too. Last one I saw was at the Kutztown Fair many moons ago. I read in Playboy earlier this year about a Combine derby that this small town holds every year out in Eastern Washington state. I'd like to check that one out!

I am a demolition derby driver/builder. There is far more to competing in a derby then just saying that you want to and having a car to do it with. The amount of effort to build a competative car is astounding. Do not judge those who compete in demolition derbys before you understand them. www.derbypro.com

I think you might be being a bit sensitive about the level of judgement going on here. Also, please remember this is Ogden, Utah. The derbys here are probably pretty different- have you ever seen a derby in Utah? Let alone Ogden. These people are locals, and self proclaimed hobbyists, but not professionals. Our hats go off to people who do this for a living, but I'm pretty positive none of them were in Ogden, Utah that night strutting their stuff. Also, please leave your name next time. We frequently delete comments when they are posted to old posts because all too often, they are simply random spam. Because yours was so relevant, it was hard to tell so we left it out of courtesy. Thanks for posting!
