Voo Doo Doughnuts: The Magic is in the Hole!

voodoo.jpg After hearing rave reviews about this little hole in the wall dough nut shop, I was eager to give it a try on our trip to Portland. Voo Doo Dough Nuts specializes in vegan dough nuts and other eclectic creations, such as the Captain Crunch pictured here. Although there was little seating to speak of and the drunk throwing up on the curb outside made me a little wary, we were not disappointed. Fluffy and sinfully delicious, these creations can be hand picked from a revolving glass case like works of art on display. It's hard to try just one, but I can vouch for the Fruit Loop and Maple Bar. Yummy. They also serve fresh, hot coffee in carafes from the famed Stumptown Coffee shop just down a block. And best of all, open 24 hours a day.

Bangkok Palace

pad thai.jpg On our trip to Oregon, we managed to squeeze a few hours in Portland into our schedule before we flew back home. After perusing downtown and the waterfront park, we were in serious need of lunch before take off and so we stopped by a promising looking Thai restaurant called Bangkok Palace. The food was incredible, on par with one of the best Thai restaurants we've ever been to in Salt Lake City. Fragrant, fresh and spicy- the flavors popped and both George and I were sad to have to leave some of our generous portions behind. While the staff seemed somewhat distracted, service was at least quick and the restaurant itself was quiet and cool- a welcome haven from the bustle outside. They have curbside dining as well with a few tables outside under the awning to enjoy the ample summer sun.
